For college students the process of academic coaching is highly individualized and tailored to each student's needs. Most students meet with me once per week, although those wishing to receive more support, particularly with working on specific assignments, meet with me for more than one hour per week.  During a typical meeting we will:

(a) evaluate how things went the previous week,

(b) determine what work needs to be done in the coming week (and beyond),

(c) construct a detailed plan for how that work will get done, and

(d) schedule  “check-ins” during the week to make sure the plan is working or to adjust the plan if necessary.

Thus, there will be a goal-setting/planning aspect to our work as well as accountability and follow-through.

Techniques

  • Review syllabi for upcoming assignments and making a plan for getting the assignments done.

  • Break down large assignments into "doable" chunks.

  • Effectively using planners, e-calendars, reminders, and to-do lists, finding the system(s) that work for you.

  • Check in between meetings for accountability and follow through.
